Hockey game fashion etiquette and other things I've thought about this week.

My Metro commute often overlaps with that of Washington Capitals fans heading to Caps games at the Verizon Center. Is there a hockey fan rule that instead of wearing a coat you must wear a hockey jersey over four hundred layers of clothing?  Because I never see them wearing coats but always see them looking like the Pillsbury dough boy with their jerseys over what I assume are seven sweatshirts. I have been to the Verizon Center; I have even been there for Caps games, in fact. And I wore a coat. I do not remember it being an issue. Then again, I spent the whole first period cheering for the wrong team because I got the jersey colors mixed up. So clearly I am not the expert.  But I was on Metro on Sunday and it was COLD outside and none of the Caps fans were wearing coats! One guy was even wearing shorts!

Why is a roll of parchment paper so much wider than the average baking sheet? Is there a standard use for it that I am overlooking that requires it to be so wide? I cringe every time I have to trim it to fit and waste paper. (My counter is normally not that cluttered!)

A few weeks into the new year and I holding true to most of my resolutions "Simplify. Slow down. Say no. Make time for my workouts. Write more. Read more. Shop less."  And collectively that means I have had a lot of much cherished quiet time and I adore it and am actually really quite selfish with it. Which is probably why I have been so crafty as of late.  Because I actually have time for it! And it is why I have had so much time to listen to my full iTunes library on shuffle. Which is a bit like walking down musical memory lane. I love how a song can take you back to a moment in life, a scene in a movie, a television show.  And it also has me wondering a few things like Whatever happened to Five for Fighting? Or Everclear? And more importantly, why do I have a HIllary Duff song?

I was obsessed with John Grisham books with I was in high school. A Time to Kill, The Pelican Brief, and The Firm, I really did not love any of his other book but these three books are some of my favorite reads. My well-worn paperback copies of these books still sit on the bookshelf in my room at my parent's house.  And now I am absolutely loving the NBC series The Firm that picks up ten years after where the book ended. I love this idea! (And I also love Josh Lucas as Mitch McDeere so much more than the movie's Tom Cruise in the role). So many times when I finish a beloved book, I take time to think about what would happen next. I have a vivid imagination so I love the tales I can spin. But also love watching this concept on television. Can we do this with The Pelican Brief too? And in like ten years, maybe with The Help too?

Happy Thursday everyone!

  1. I love your refererence to songs. I have a crazy playlist of songs that I love. Some remind me of different points in my life and why in the world did I download an Ashley Tisdale song??? Possibly a lapse in judgement to find a good song to run to...(it's bad by the way).
I want to start tapping into my crafty side, but I've been busy planning a baby shower. Once I get through that, 2 kids birthday parties (apr & may), my 30th, and Tim's 36th..I'll be able to breath and relax!

    Happy Thursday to you!!!!

  2. speaking of sports jerseys...my least favorite...the basketball jersey! There is nothing more annoying (or a major turn off) as a guy wearing one...especially w/out an undershirt. One of my weird fashion peet peeves.

  3. I always wear my jersey to games :) Total nerd but it's signed by one of my favorite players. However I try to wear it with skinny jeans and boots so I look like I have some sort of shape. The problem is authentic jerseys are designed for big musular guys wearing pads, not people normal sized! I want to get one of the "women's cut" jerseys so I don't look so marshmallow man! :)

I love cute guys in jerseys but that's just because I'm a total sports nut

  6. I never noticed the hockey fan phenomenon but now that I think back on the games I've attended, you're so right! But when I go, I don't even have a jersey, so therefore I wear a coat. That only makes sense when it's SO cold.

  7. It's been a really long time since I've taken the Metro to get to a Caps game so I guess that's why I don't see it. I always wear my jersey to games - it's a kids' size so it fits properly everywhere except that the sleeves are slightly too short - and I don't wear 87 layers under it. I don't even know how people could do that. It gets warm in the Verizon Center!

  8. I feel the same way about wasting parchment! I got some on a roll from Williams Sonoma and it fits you just tear off length.

  9. I think all of the fans I encounter on Metro have perfected the Marshmallow Man look. ;-)

  10. Maybe it is because I grew up in Wisconsin but when it is cold outside, I wear a coat. Especially when I go somewhere where the focal point is a ring of ice!

  11. And much like kid sized UGGs, kids' sports attire is so much cheaper. I only wish my feet were kid sized!
