Back to School Giveaway #4: Magic School Bus Ride

First, I think yesterday’s giveaway got buried underneath Whoopie Pie Wednesday and maybe you missed it.  Be sure to click over here and enter!  (People, there is a picture of me at 12 years old with a mullet…you know you want to see that!)

All through school, field trips were like a mirage in the dessert. One glorious day where you did not have to sit in a classroom; you could wear shorts that were shorter than the dress code mandated; and you were able to go exotic and fun places!

During my time in the Coleman School District, I think I took 8,273,004 field trips to the Peshtigo Fire Museum. The Peshtigo Fire--which happened on the same day as the Chicago Fire and is much lesser known--happened in the next town over.  After the first six times, I seriously hated this field trip.

The field trip to end all field trips in the Coleman Elementary School was the third grade trip to Heritage Hill. Heritage Hill is one of those living history museums where actors work in each of the buildings and take you back to a different time. Also, the gift shop sold really good candy. Naturally, on the day of this trip, I came down with the chicken pox! For the second time! (And before anyone asks, I had them bad both times, once as an infant, and then that fateful third grade case.)  So I guess my most memorable field trip was the one I didn’t get to go on!

I also remember field trips to Lambeau Field (um, hello, I am from Northern Wisconsin…this is like the holy land), the Milwaukee Zoo, Neville Science Museum, and the NEW Zoo (at least 10 fields here too).

To enter today’s giveaway, tell me about your favorite or most memorable school field trip!

  1. Oh let's see: There was the trip to the pumpkin patch in kindergarten, the 8,000 trips to the Air & Space Museum, and 2 trips in high school to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore where we pretty much got to roam the Inner Harbor for 6 hours.

But the entry for memorable field trip would have to be the elementary school trip (6th grade?) to the Franciscan Monastery in Northeast DC where we toured the 'catacombs' and one girl swore for weeks that Bloody Mary appeared to her in the bathroom mirror. Good times...

  2. In the Austin school district they would always take the 5th graders to see the Nutcracker...I just remember being in AWE of all they could do, especially since I was taking ballet. It made me want to be a ballerina when I grew up...I wonder whatever happened to that dream? :)

  3. In fifth grade we went to the local jail...I guess it was to scare us straight? It has been the one field trip I have never forgotten!

  4. I lived in so many different places - can I tell you about a favorite field trip from each place? Ok, I'm going to anyway, whether it's okay or not!

In 6th grade, while at Hendy Elementary in Elmira, NY - we went to a theme park in Toronto, Ontario! Not only was this soooo cool because we got to spend the night in a hotel, but also because it was the first time I ever rode a rollercoaster! And,there was no educational advancement involved :-) I was so excited to ride the roller coaster with my sixth grade teacher (and still one of my favorites). I think that's part of the reason why I still love rollercoasters now!

In high school I went to a performing arts school in Louisville, KY, and our orchestra (which is the thing I got into the school for) went out a bunch of times to different places to perform. I think one of the coolest places we got to go was Chicago to perform at the Midwest Clinic. Our conductor was sick and he couldn't come, so we got to perform sans conductor. It was probably the coolest experience I ever got. And, we got to stay in a cool hotel for 4 nights.

Lastly - I lived in Israel for a year, and took a history of Zionism course. Every week on Tuesday we'd discuss another important aspect of Zionism, and then on Thursday we'd go visit the site or memorial or whatever that was based on that important aspect. I had so much fun!

  5. For where I grew up, Disney World was a common trip. Probably the most memorable: I was in high school - a junior, maybe. We were going to Disney (band trip I think). I made a fast trip to the car just before boarding the bus - can't remember what for. Went to Disney. Coming back, about 1 mile from the school, my mom (who chaperoned just about everything!) asked me for the car keys. Ummm....

Where were they? On the top of the car, in the parking lot. And it hadn't even been taken on a joy ride.

  6. Old World Wisconsin and Cave of the Mounds! A whole day out of school, a super long bus ride to sing obnoxious songs, AND we got to see cool/educational stuff.

  7. None of the school trips really stand out all tha much, but I do recall going to Heritage Hill - Kristen Risner and I made sure we took in all of the details of Heritage Hill so we could go back to my farm and reinact their lifestyle - Little House on the Prairie Style. We would pack up go play house with our dolls in the grainery on the farm and they had their little bonnets on and the whole deal. Looking back, that's pretty digusting. I mean, the grainery was full of oats, spiders, flies, dirt, dust, etc etc etc - it was a working grainery. And here's me and Kristen playing house with our dolls. Thanks Heritage Hill. Thanks.

  8. my very favorite was a 5th grade camping extravaganza! we went to cripple creek, an old gold town, for 4 days and camped out the whole time. we went on a tour of the old gold mine, rode the railroad, went to the opera house (picture 20 5th graders sitting through an opera - it's comical), were quickly ushered past the casinos, and hiked/swam/biked and otherwise learned about the outdoors. it was such a blast of a trip! so fun.
