Fab Find Fridays is a new, regular feature to the blog that will feature items that are Rebecca Approved and Beloved. Basically, it is like a weekly Oprah’s Favorite Things without the unlimited disposable income and probably no car giveaways. And hey now that Oprah is retiring or whatever, maybe my Fab Find Fridays can take over!!! For previous Fab Finds, click here.
Today’s Fab Find Fridays takes a seasonal turn because if you haven’t figured it out yet, I love Christmas! I also love children’s books. I was a rather voracious reader as a tot. And even before I could not read by myself, I was ALWAYS being read to. Family legend has it that it was the only way I would be quiet.
Even now, I find myself purchasing children’s Christmas books because there is just something magical about them. They capture the spirit of the season as it was intended. Not that I mind the shopping/baking/gift giving aspects of Christmas but sometimes it is good to refocus….especially when holiday induced Rebecca Rage makes an appearance. And also, children’s book always have the prettiest artwork in them.
So today’s Fab Finds are the children’s Christmas books that I have been reading ( it takes like two minutes to read these so they are perfect for short attention span that sometimes plagues me).
The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas – I LOVED the Berenstain Bears when I was little. I have the entire collection of their books. I always wanted to have a house like their tree house. Still sort of do. In this holiday-themed book, Santa Bear is VERY cranky and wants to cancel Christmas until people, er bears, remember what Christmas is all about. The rhyming text is adorable and moral-based as all things Berenstain Bears usually are “But now it seemed Christmas no longer meant love. Now it seemed Christmas meant let’s push and shove. Let’s fight for that very last toy on the shelf! Let’s look out for that fellow known as yourself!” And the details in the illustrations is so perfect….my fav detail: The toy store is called “Toys ‘R’ Bears.” hee hee. The book is currently out of print but can be purchased on half.com for as little as 75 cents.
Care Bears Catch the Christmas Spirit – Fun fact: The very first movie that I ever saw in a theatre was The Care Bears Movie. In this book, the other Bears try to help Grumpy Bear find his Christmas Spirit. (This book is put out by Scholastic which always make me think of getting the Scholastic Book Order forms in elementary school and very meticulously studying it and selecting my books and stickers from it. I LIVED for that!)
The Polar Express – A Christmas Classic. Such a good book and the artwork in it is AMAZING! Not so amazing was the movie version of it. The movie was downright creepy. I think it would been so much better if it had been done with real live people and not creepy computer generated ones.
The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree – This is the newest member of my Christmas book collection. After reading about it on Queen Bee Swain’s blog, I knew that I needed to have. It is SUCH a sweet book set in Appalachia during World War I. Beautiful illustrations and I teared up a little reading it.
I am always on the lookout for new books. So please leave a comment indicating which children's Christmas book is YOUR favorite.
