I am a definitely carry-on bag overpacker. I just like to be prepared for anything. Say for example, if the plane were to land safely in a corn field in the middle of an uninhabited piece of the world, then I would like to be ready with the tools to construct a home out of cornstalks. Do I know how to do this? Nope, but I have packed the book the explains the details.
Five things in my carry-on bag:
Sleep Mask and Mini Pillow – I am pretty much incapable of getting any substantial sleep while in any form of transportation. And it has less to do with the movement and distractions than it does with the whole sitting up. I just cannot sleep sitting up. In my personal attempt to overcome this, I buy cute travel sleep accessories. My eye mask and mini pillow are both by Bucky’s. They have a bunch of super fun prints that will make travel sleep (or non-sleep) more stylish. (Note: I slept for 2.5 hours on my flight across the Atlantic. This is a personal best.)
Pashmina – I never ever ever ever travel without a pashmina. I own about 15 of them in a variety of colors and patterns. Between the months of November and March, I almost always have one draped around my neck in some form. They keep me so snuggly warm. Especially on chilly airplanes. Pashminas also make great blankets.
Giovanni Hand Wipes – I recently introduced my parents to these amazing hand wipes (there was a maple syrup incident at brunch) and they are hooked!!! They are soo soft (you can use them on your face as well) and luxurious and come in a variety of great scents (my personal favorite is the grapefruit). My normal hand sanitizer is a spray but rather than deal with the liquids when flying, I just throw a bunch of these in my cosmetics case.
Snacks! – I always try save a little money on exorbitantly priced airport foods and pack my own snacks. My standbys are Kashi Crackers with a Laughing Cow Light Cheese wedge and Greek Yogurt with a fresh fruit (blueberries this time). From Whole Foods, I also had a sample pack of the 365 Organic Snack ‘n Quacks (or Quack ‘n Snack…I cannot remember), which are just Goldfish crackers shaped like ducks.
Reading Material – What I am reading on this trip: My magazine stash includes InStyle, Real Simple, The Economist, Martha Stewart Living, Budget Decorating, and Shop Smart. If you would consider my brain in six sections, those six magazines would probably best categorize each section. LOL. Also, I am reading Tom Friedman’s The World is Flat. I know it came out forever ago and for a while everyone was reading it. Except me, I was probably reading the newest in the Shopaholic series. Then we spent a lot of time discussing it during the Creativity and Innovation course I took a few weeks ago and I found myself intrigued and clicking over to Amazon to purchase it.
And about the bag itself. It’s new. I knew that there was a lot that I planned to bring on the plane with me and I wanted a bigger bag. Usually my carry-on bag is whatever my handbag of the moment is. But then I was at the Container Store and saw the “Only Bagg” by Baggalini and was intrigued. It’s called the Only Bagg because “it’s the only bag you’ll ever need.” And it was “only” 65 dollars. Which seemed like too much. So I went home and Googled the bag and found it for $29 at the REI outlet store online. They only had it in two colors, black and a light mocha. I often find that shades of light brown work with more outfits than black so I went with mocha. I have to say that I am fan of the bag so far. I could fit so much into it! And the handles are long enough that it hangs well from the shoulder (nothing ruins a handbag for me more than ill-fitting handles).
